Incorporating DEI into Your Nonprofit's Mission and Values

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are no longer just buzzwords; they are important principles that drive positive change and lead to just and equitable societies. For nonprofits integrating DEI into your mission and values isn't just a moral imperative because it's a strategic necessity. Intentionally creating spaces where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute meaningfully is an important value and goal. Below I outline ten authentic ways nonprofit organizations can incorporate DEI into their core operations and strategies.

1. Reflect on Where You Are Currently - evaluate where your nonprofit stands regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. Conduct surveys, focus groups, listening circles, or town halls to understand the demographics and experiences of your staff, volunteers, board directors, and members. Review your policies, practices, and organizational culture to identify areas for improvement.

2. Develop a DEI Statement - craft a statement that outlines your nonprofit's commitment to achieving DEI. This statement should be posted on your website, in your promotional materials, and on social media, and shared with staff and stakeholders.

3. Engage in Continuous Learning - DEI work is ongoing and requires a commitment to continuous learning and growth. Invest in DEI training for staff and board members, and encourage open dialogue and discussion around DEI issues. Stay informed about best practices and emerging trends in DEI.

4. Create Inclusive Policies and Practices - review and revise your organization's policies and practices to ensure these support your DEI goals and values. This will include adopting inclusive hiring practices, implementing flexible work policies, creating safe reporting mechanisms for discrimination and harassment, and accommodating people’s diverse needs.

5. Foster a Culture of Belonging - cultivate a culture where everyone feels a sense of belonging and can bring their full selves to work. Celebrate diversity through cultural events, recognition programs, and inclusive language. Encourage open communication and feedback channels to address concerns and promote well-being.

6. Diversify Leadership and Representation - complete a diversity audit of your leadership positions, including your board of directors and executive team. Ensure that decision-making bodies reflect the communities you serve and include diverse identities, perspectives, and experiences.

7. Collaborate with Diverse Partners - build partnerships with various organizations, communities, and stakeholders. Collaborative efforts can amplify your impact, broaden your reach, and foster cross-cultural knowledge and understanding.

8. Measure and Track Progress - create metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to track your progress in DEI initiatives. Collect relevant data, regularly evaluate the impact of your efforts, and be willing to course-correct as needed.

9. Communicate Transparently - keep your stakeholders informed about your DEI efforts and progress. Share success stories, challenges faced, and lessons learned. Transparency builds trust and accountability and is a key principle to deepen this work.

10. Listen and Amplify Voices - actively listen to the voices of equity-deserving communities and incorporate their perspectives into your decision-making processes. Amplify diverse voices through storytelling, guest speakers, and representation throughout your organization and work.

By incorporating DEI into your nonprofit's mission and values you create a more inclusive and equitable organization and contribute to a broader movement toward justice and positive change.
